Wamena is the central location of the district of Jayawijaya. It is the hub of transportation for nearly all interior highland villages. Most of the air services (non profit and for profit) fly out of Wamena. Wamena's population is about 40,000, although it's numbers vary according to how often people venture out of their villages as many then can't afford to fly home, or choose not to walk home. Located in a long wide valley called the Baliem, Wamena is blessed with abundant rainfall and vegetable produce like cauliflower, tomatoes, cabbage, cucumbers, avocadoes, corn, sweet potato, yam, and potato. |
